Synopsis

The chapter examines the economic impact of European Union membership, focusing on economic convergence, integration with the internal market, and the use of EU funds. It analyses the GDP growth trends and economic convergence of countries that joined the EU during the 2004, 2007, and 2013 enlargement waves, with a particular focus on the Visegrad Group. The chapter also explores the effects of EU membership on trade patterns, competitiveness, and innovation, highlighting the role of economies of scale and technological adoption in enhancing economic performance. Additionally, the chapter evaluates the impact of EU structural and cohesion funds on reducing regional disparities, improving infrastructure, and fostering sustainable development. Key findings indicate that while EU membership has generally accelerated economic growth and integration, outcomes vary across countries due to differences in governance, institutional capacity, and the absorption efficiency of EU funds.
